We've all been raised with knock knock jokes and yes they are quite lame after 7 years old so I can't say I have a good'ole laugh when I hear one. I also can't ever think of a good one to be honest but something to not joke about in our life as Christians is that moment in our walk when the devil comes knocking. It's not always evident, it's not always easy to distinguish and many of us don't truly know how to fight back (speaking from previous personal experience.) This can definitely be a scary and pivotal moment if you're not sure what you're opening the door to or more importantly who's behind it.
Growing up I realized that many of my struggles were not just related to the peer pressure in my life as a teen but also the thoughts in my own head that I allowed to conquer me. Thoughts of fear, thoughts of depression, suicidal thoughts, self esteem damaging thoughts, faith doubting thoughts, defying thoughts etc. It was all negative to say the least and I just let it fill my mind to consumption. I was a young girl who didn't understand my struggles spiritually and whenever I wanted to serve God or get closer to Him these thoughts were louder than ever.
In Matthew 4:1-11 we can read about how even Jesus was tempted by Satan. I specifically like to focus on this part.
3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’
See the enemy tries to plant doubt by saying "if", "If You are the Son of God." We hear that word a lot throughout this whole passage and how many times have I heard that same "if" myself.
"If" you're a Christian then why did you say what you just said? "If" your a child of God then why are you talking back to your parents? What "if" you try that just once? Why are you depressed "if" God is suppose to fill your life with joy?
So many "if" questions all leading to temptation and leading our minds to take on an act of doubt. The "if" was the knocking in my life and for so long I opened the door. The "if" was the king of my temptations. It was the opening line to my downfalls and without realizing it I always allowed the "ifs" to come in.
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Matthew 26:41
I want to start by saying that you 100% need an active prayer life otherwise there will be no way for you to fight this. Even Jesus faced the enemy prayed up after a long fast. In order for you to have a victory against these temptations and these thoughts that deceive you, you to have Jesus answer the door beside you. He needs to be the one you look to when the knocking begins. When your friends ask questions like, " why don't you just try it this once?" Or when your own thoughts are telling that you are worthless and no body loves you just look to Jesus.
Go back to His word that will give you the answer you need. Get in your prayer closet to find your answers. Seek and you will find says the word of God. You have those thoughts that confuse you? Then give it to God. You have hateful thoughts, thoughts of worthlessness, thoughts to dabble in sin? Then go back to prayer as it will fortify you and strengthen your spirit. Answer the devils knocking with that double edged sword (the word) as Jesus did. Tell him it is written, no weapon formed against me shall prosper!
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Identify that the enemy is attempting to gain battle ground and if you don't have your General guiding your battle plans you will surely be defeated. Acknowledge and trust Gods sovereignty and let Him stand at the front lines with you. Yes you will make mistakes, the struggle is real dear sister but stay strong and keep fighting the good fight. After all the victory is already yours, you just have to endure long enough to obtain it.
